“That’s what we lost to addiction—ourselves-- and every time we find a way to express ourselves honestly and authentically, I think we get a little piece back.”

That line is definitely going to make it into a letter I’m sending someone this week. Powerful!!!

Well, I stole from you, so it’s only fair.

I love this line:

The purpose of this is not to simply stop drinking, it is to recover ourselves.

And what Holly quoted to!

I think this applies not just to people who lose themselves to substance addiction, but also to people who simply lose themselves.

In their jobs (whether they overwork, or are consumed by how much they hate it) or even in their marriages. Anything can be used as a way to escape ourselves - and we all do it, to varying degrees, most of the time.

Creativity and self-expression are the moments to cultivate where we remember who we are, and we allow that being to be seen. And by inherent invitation, others to see their selves.

I think this is so true---drinking isn't the only way to lose your way but it seems like expressing yourself authentically is always the way back.

Thank you so much and you know how much I love what you do!

Yes! How many times have I lost my way? While I'm not recovering from a substance addiction, this year *has* been a year of focused recovery for me. And there is so much more work to be done (does it ever stop?). Writing here has definitely helped me with that.
