The thing that’s really moving is the love my grandfather showed for a broken-down alcoholic. Sometimes, I feel like I learned everything I needed to know in my grandfather’s basement. He taught me how to hunt, fish, tell jokes, roll cigarettes, play blackjack, play poker, get away with minor misstatements, and how to love alcoholics. I guess that last one was a lesson someone thought I would need eventually.
I’ve often wondered how it is a soul responds to certain influences and decides to experience or carry a generational experience on….. or not 🤔🤔. And though it’s not particularly logical, I always come down to “choice” - with the open question “Who chooses?” Cause and effect can be as illusory as what we call “reality”.
In a very real sense, I am keeping your son and family in my thoughts and prayers.
The prayers are very much appreciated. I guess there could be a choice involved. As I found (continue to find) myself, I began to understand where things came from. Also, as I begin to see pieces of myself in my kids, I also begin to see the pieces that are in me.
Take good care of yourself. You, your family, and especially your son will be in my prayers. Your grandfather was a treasure.
Thank you—that’s very kind and very much agree about my grandfather. I have a very excellent role model!
How amazing that your grandfather's love is still there for you. Lovely to see him through your eyes.
